Understanding Temperature Scales
Three main temperature scales are used worldwide, each with different reference points and applications:
- Celsius (°C): Uses water's freezing point (0°C) and boiling point (100°C) at sea level. Used in most countries and scientific contexts worldwide.
- Fahrenheit (°F): Sets water's freezing point at 32°F and boiling point at 212°F. Primarily used in the United States for weather, cooking, and everyday temperatures.
- Kelvin (K): The scientific temperature scale starting at absolute zero (0K), where molecular motion stops. Uses the same degree size as Celsius but starts at -273.15°C. Essential in physics and chemistry.
Common Temperature Conversions
Here are some frequently used temperature conversions for reference:
- Water freezing point: 0°C = 32°F = 273.15K
- Water boiling point: 100°C = 212°F = 373.15K
- Normal body temperature: 37°C = 98.6°F = 310.15K
- Room temperature: 20-25°C = 68-77°F = 293.15-298.15K
