How Reading Time is Calculated
Reading time is calculated by dividing the total word count by the average reading speed (words per minute). The default reading speed is 200-250 WPM for adults reading non-technical content.
For speaking time, we use a slower default of 130-150 WPM, as people typically speak more slowly than they read silently.
Reading Speed Guide
- 100-150 WPM: Careful reading of technical or complex content
- 200-250 WPM: Average adult reading speed for casual content
- 300-400 WPM: Speed reading or skimming familiar material
- 150-200 WPM: Technical documentation, legal text, or educational material
- 120-150 WPM: Natural speaking pace for presentations and speeches
When to Use a Reading Time Calculator
- Blog posts: Display estimated reading time to set reader expectations and reduce bounce rates
- Presentations: Ensure your speech fits within allocated time slots
- Podcast scripts: Plan episode length and segment timing
- Video scripts: Calculate duration for YouTube videos or tutorials
- Articles: Meet publication word count requirements while estimating reader commitment
Frequently Asked Questions
Why show reading time on blog posts?
Displaying reading time helps readers decide whether to read now or save for later. Studies show that articles with visible reading times have higher engagement rates because readers know what to expect.
What is the ideal reading time for a blog post?
Research suggests 7 minutes (about 1,600 words) is optimal for engagement. However, this varies by topic. Technical tutorials may need longer, while news updates work better shorter.
How accurate is the reading time estimate?
The estimate is based on averages and may vary by reader. Factors like content complexity, reader familiarity with the topic, and presence of images or code blocks affect actual reading time.
